Keep the 'Social' in Social Media

There’s an old saying that says you’re only as old as you feel.  Well, I have to tell you when I started this entrepreneurial journey I felt really old when it came to social media.  I wasn’t on Facebook and had no desire to be.  The only tweeting I did was when I wanted to mock some bird in the backyard.  I was on LinkedIn because I thought it was cool to send someone an invitation after meeting them, but I really didn’t think it had much purpose from what I could see.

But one thing I’ve learned in my many years rolling around this planet is that you better be able to change.  Because if you can’t handle change you might as well stick a fork in it and call it done!  So now I have a whole bunch of connections on LinkedIn and Twitter.  Facebook and Google+ are coming along but Pinterest is still a total mystery.  But I’m still on them, trying to figure out just how it all works.  And now I’m providing social media marketing for clients.

But like most things, when you boil it all down and examine what remains you realize it’s really just people.  And you find there are so many people willing to share what they know and help you find your way.  I’ve had several that I’ve followed closely and learned so much just observing how they market themselves.  And if you interact with them you find that they are very willing to share their thoughts.

So learn all you can about all of the apps and technologies available to help us do better work, but remember that the foundation is still relationships.  That is what will determine whether your business succeeds or fails.
